India To Start Issuing ID Cards To Cows

The government has made a proposal to the Supreme Court to provide the cows in the country with a unique identification proof like the Aadhaar card for its citizens.

News agency ANI, in a tweet, said, "each cow and its progency across India should get a Unique Identification Number for tracking", the centre told Supreme Court.

The government also proposed that there should be provision for special care of cattle beyond the age of milking and highlighted the issue of cow protection and smuggling of cows across the India-Bangladesh border.

According to a Zee News report, the recommendations were made by a committee headed by the Joint Secretary, Home Ministry.

This comes after the animal husbandry department was assigned technicians to affix a tag with a 12-digit unique id number inside the ears of cows, according to The Economic Times.

So far, 1 lakh technicians have been armed with 50,000 tablets.

This comes in the backdrop of cow vigilantes turning violent in various parts of the country and amid the government's ban on beef hoarding and consumption.

The government is already facing flak from the Supreme Court for making the Aadhaar card mandatory for various social schemes and availing other services like continuing a mobile phone connection, PAN card, issuing a PAN card, filing income tax returns, and getting a drivers' licence too. The SC recently rapped the government for violating its previous order of not making Aadhaar card mandatory for any government schemes.
