The founder of the Ikeja Branch of the Nigerian Society of
Engineers, Pa Olu Awoyinfa, had died in his hometown, Ilesa, Osun State.
He was aged 70, having marked his 70th birthday anniversary on June 1.
The
chairman of the Ikeja branch of the NSE, Akin Akintola, told the News
Agency of Nigeria on Sunday that a message was sent from the Awoyinfa’s
family in Ilesa to inform the branch that he died last Tuesday.
Akintola said the late Awoyinfa was a selfless leader who worked only for the progress of the engineering bodies globally.
He said: “He started the Ikeja NSE in 1993.
“He did those things not because of selfish position.
“He never went for any position.
“He was an advisor.
“He
came to us on August 3 to say he was retiring from engineering, that he
would not follow us to the Council for Regulation of Engineering
Assembly.”
Awoyinfa was also the founder of the Nigerian Society of Chemical Engineers.
He
was born on June 1, 1942 in Ilesa, Osun State and had his primary and
secondary education in Osun State and in the defunct Delta State
respectively.
He also attended London University, West Ham, where he got a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering.
Pa
Awoyinfa, a fellow of the Nigerian Society of Chemical Engineer, also
founded the arm in Lagos in 1969, while he began the Ikeja NSE in 1993.
He was the National Patron of Nigerian University Engineering Students Association from 1980 till he passed on.
He
held several elective offices in the society, which included National
Secretary General of NSE from 1986 to 1988; Secretary General,
Federation of African Organisation of Engineers, from 1993 to 1995 and
from 2000 to August 15, 2017.
He was an active member of
various local and international engineering professional bodies,
including COREN and Petrochemical Committee Manchester Chamber of
Commerce.
He was a production manager, Lever Brothers, Apapa from 1968 to 1970 and first Chemical Manager, Shell Nigeria Plc 1971 to 1976.
Akintola
said engineers from various fields had been visiting the secretariat of
the Ikeja branch of the NSE to sign the condolence register.
Rose Igboanugo said: “You were a visionary leader, an admirable mentor of the engineering profession.
“Your
legacy will long be remembered. May the Lord console your loved ones
and give the engineering family the fortitude to carry on; rest in
perfect peace.”
NAN reports that the late Awoyinfa would be buried next month.
